Day 0: Depart USA. Remember, you'll arrive in Europe the day after you depart the USA.
So our plan was to eat near the airport and have plenty of time for an international check-in for our first leg to Paris. We ate dinner at a Longhorn restaurant (the Red Lobster had a two hour wait) at Camp Creek Marketplace approximately 3-4 miles from the airport. We went through the check-in and security procedure at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport with little difficulty. We tried to sleep on the plane using eye masks but I probably saw every hour on the clock. A very energetic senior citizen tour group was also on the flight headed to Venice and didn’t seem to need sleep.

We left home around 4:45pm for our 9:30pm flight. This was NASCAR weekend at the Atlanta Motor Speedway and we definitely did not want to get caught by race traffic.
Our travel journals—Danny and I kept separate pocket journals. Danny documented each day’s pictures he took on his digital camera each night, or at least tried to. My journal contains the trip highlights recorded here, mostly in outline form as well as the descriptions of the pictures I took on my digital camera. |
