Day 11: Paris on our own

Transit Strike

Our last day of our Rome-to-Paris trip.  Sadly, we pack and prepare to catch our 1:50pm flight.  The news says France’s train system will be on strike.  The strike had started the day before and would last until tomorrow.  We didn’t think much of it since were using the Paris metro system.

Breakfast is at Petit B again.  The croissants melted in my mouth.

Back at Hôtel Muguet we grab our bags, settle our bill and ride the metro to the RER transfer station.  It was when we arrived we realized that we will be affected by the transit strike.  The first train we tried to board, literally was packed so full, I expected someone to pass out from lack of oxygen.  Picture in your mind’s eye every train car like those telephone booths that young people used to see how many bodies could be crammed into — now picture those same people with luggage.

Announcements were being made, however neither one of us spoke French pass basic greetings.  We simply moved when the masses moved. Fortunately, we’d left plenty of time to catch our flight to Atlanta and we were not at panic mode yet.

The next train was stampeded; but by the time we rushed to a front car, we were even able to grab two seats together.  We flew home with tons of fond memories of our first ever Rick Steves' tour.
