Day 8: Last Day in Rome on our own

Last Day In Rome On Our Own - Pickpocket Alert!

Danny and I wake to the international news that Suddam Hussein is sentenced to death by hanging.

We eat breakfast, wash some clothes and leave for one final day of sightseeing.

Leaving the hotel at 10:45am, we walk to the Baths of the Diocletian to visit the Octagonal Hall.  We ask about the boxer statue and was told it is now in the National Museum of Rome.

We walk over to the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli to see it in daylight.  I enter the church first and notice Danny is not behind me.  I step back to the small foyer area and see Danny surrounded by three teenage girls.  One has a cardboard sign thrust toward him hiding her hands, the other two behind him with hands probing.  I yell, “No, no, no, come on in Danny” and wave him in the church.  The girls retreat to outside the church.

Thanks to Rick’s Europe Through the Back Door, specifically the chapter on Outsmarting Thieves, I recognized immediately what was happening.  St. Simone to the rescue! Thanks Rick!  Danny didn’t have anything valuable to pick but we picked up a fun memory in Rome.

We religiously wore our money belts so we were not overly concerned about pickpockets.

On our way to the National Museum of Rome, we run into Marsha.  We told her about our incident and she said she saw a woman this morning looking really hard at her purse.  Marsha told the woman there was nothing in it to take and to not bother making a play for any valuables.

We catch the #40 back to Hotel Nardizzi.   Back at Hotel Nardizzi, we settle the bill; request a wake-up call at 4am and a taxi to the airport at 4:45am.  Our wonderful visit to Rome is coming to an end, but we're not finished with our vacation yet....we leave for Paris early in the morning.
